Fly Fishing Report - April, 2015

Fishing Report April, 2015

Putah Creek fly fishing – Fair to good. Best fishing has been mid morning and again in the afternoon. Sporadic hatches of Blue Wing Olive are about it as far as hatches go. Indicator nymphing with a two fly rig has been producing some a few nice fish. Glad to see smaller fish (6 to 8 inch range) being caught which is indicative of recent spawn success. Blue Wing olives have been hatching in the afternoon. Fish BWO nymphs under a caddis or other attractor. Remember to go small and light with point fly with a Blue Wing Olive nymphs down to 6x tippet. Decent fishing should continue until flows increase above 500cfs in the next few weeks.

Guide Tip : Try using a San Juan Worm with a small Baetis dropper in deeper slots. Some nice fish landed last week on SJW’s.

Yuba River fly fishing – Good to very good. Best fishing is in the afternoon but river can be busy at times from above highway 20 to Sycamore Ranch. Skwala hatch is tapering off however March Browns and PMD’s are hatching later in the day on sunny days making for good fishing. Fishing from shore and drift boats have been productive. Down stream drift is required to fool selective fish on dries. In the morning before hatches start or to search for fish try small mayfly nymphs, caddis pupae or midge in tandem with a stonefly under an indicator. On cloudy days anglers can expect Blue Wing Olive activity.

Guide tip:Noon to 2:30 is the best fishing window right now with good caddis hatches throughout the river. Fish dark nymph and caddis patterns along with yellow Microspawn or a brown Rubberleg.

Napa River fly fishing – Fishing has been slow. Most of the larger Spring fish have headed back to the Bay. Look for things to pick up for fly fishing in late May/June. Smaller shakers will show up first, then larger fish in August and throughout the Fall.

Pattern Suggestions - Stay Hungry Streamer(Chart. & Gray), Clouser Minnow, Game Changer, Major Bunker (#6 to 1/0)

Guide tip: Go trout fishing or go fish the Delta

Truckee River fly fishing – Fair Boca to Stampede. There have been some good reports of BWO hatches around mid day as well as some midge activity. A stealthy approach and small dries with light tippets are required to hook fish. There are also opportunities to catch fish on slightly larger attractor nymphs under an indicator especially down river where flows are high and a bit stained. Fish a larger Skwala or other stone and a smaller BWO or PMD below it.Start to think about fishing March Browns as they will be early this year.
