Lower Sac wine maker's weekend trip report
Recently we fished a great group of guys from VIP Wealth Management of Southern California. They enjoyed two days of fly fishing on Lower Sacramento up in Redding. Two day drifts were the bookends on a great wine maker’s dinner on Saturday night. Fun fishing was had along with Lots of good laughs and stories told over great food and superb wines. This was definitely a trip to remember.
Most of the guys had never fly fished before, although as life-long conventional anglers they would pick fly fishing up very quickly.
We all met for an orientation/meet and greet over a glass of wine on Friday evening. Several of the trip guides were on hand including Mike Parker, Ernie Dennison and Josh Schwartz. They answered questions and shared some secret patterns and tips regarding the next couple days of fly fishing.
After a good night’s rest courtesy of the Hilton Garden Inn we reconvened over breakfast. Once the tanks were full we headed a few blocks away to The Fly Shop. The guys hooked up with their guides and hit the water.
Summer flows on the Sac recently came up at 10,000 cfs making for more challenging than normal fly fishing. Fishing was better for most of the boats on the first day with several boats netting 20 or more trout between Anderson and Red Bluff.
The second day the guides fished the area up in Redding. The fishing was slower numbers wise, but the largest Rainbow of the trip was caught on Sunday at 21”. PMD’s and a few Caddis were on the water both days but it was the PMD’s nymphs that were the best producers. Hot flies included Mercer’s Epoxy Back PMD as well as the Flatulator and Sucker Spawn.
After a good first day of fishing, everyone freshening up at the hotel and caught the shuttle to the Maritime Seafood and Grill. Chef and fly fishing guide par excellence Josh Schwartz and renown wine maker Phillip Titus worked with the Maritime chef in pairing great wines from Chappellet and Titus Vineyards. Six fantastic food courses and coinciding wine pairings were thoroughly enjoyed by all.
A big thank you to Vance B. for bringing some great friends and clients to fish with us! Thanks everyone for the great feedback regarding the trip. We are looking forward to fishing you all again soon.
