Putah Pays Off

This morning I was treated to taking out a 15 year old kid named Jack. Jack told me that he had done quite a bit of fly fishing already though neverbecause in "Northern California. I could tell by the way he said it that he was already afly fishing addict.

After the first five minutes of watching him roll cast, mend, and read the water I could tell that he was a stud. I told him what a challenge Putah Creek can be but if you get technical you can do pretty well. I took us a couple of hours to find the fish but once we did we caught fire.

The Yuba River is on!

The Yuba River is finally down to just over 3,000 cfs. The guys have been hooking good numbers of fish to 22 inches on both dries and nymphs. This is a great time to get out and give the Yuba a go!

The Shad are in!

Guide Dave Barbieri has been fly fishing recently with clients and finding good numbers of Shad on the lower Yuba River. He has had trips with double digits on Trout and Shad despite high water. Dave has private access to the lower river and has this area figured out.

Deschutes

When I received an invitation to fish the Deschutes River in Eastern Oregon with an old friend Greg Schuerger I was very excited to say the least.

Take a Chance

During the winter I was given a lead on a small creek here in the valley that was loaded with wild fish. I had almost forgotten about iI until my buddy phoned me and said he wanted to fish but fish somewhere new.

I told him about the lead I had on this place but did not really know what to expect. There is a great feeling of joy heading out to a place that you have never fished. You run the chance of the day being a total bust but we were prepared for that if it were the case.

A day to remember...two old fishing pals...two flies and 232 Bass in one day!

This past Saturday a friend and I had a fly fishing day for the ages. Dr Eric Herve has been fishing pal of mine for a number of years now. We have had countless adventures together. From attempting to turn my Chevy Silverado into a drift boat on the Yuba, to random incidents and great fishing memories.

Yuba report

Fly fishing legend Billy Pate passes away.

Billy Pate a legendary tarpon fisherman passed away April 18 at the age of 81. He was a remarkable angler and someone that inspired me to first want to fish for Tarpon. My first recollection of him was in a video clip from a Scientific Anglers 3M video that I saw at Kiene's about 15 years ago. His manic pursuit of "larrge Tarrrpon" as he used to say in a southern drawl led him to become an expert's expert. He frequented the Florida Keys and everglades and his boat with large custom casting platform with foam covered pipes bouncing down the road also became legendary.

Summer on Putah

Warm weather, high water, and lots of day traffic as of recent on the creek. Just a taste of whats to come. Last I checked the flows were at 450 and they will only be rising. Not to say there aren't ways to get in and catch fish but your really need to know the spots, how to access them, and how to get creative with your casts to get your fly to the strike zone. Needless to say that fighting fish at these flows can be as tough as hooking them.
