Northern California Fly Fishing Report
September, 2015

Fall is right around the corner and despite drought conditions there are plenty of fly fishing options here in Northern California. Dates are booking up quickly so give us a call today to reserve your trip(707)287-2939.

Putah Creek - Fair to good. Flows - low and clear. Temps high 50’s to low 60’s, 400cfs. Best fishing has been first thing in the morning and again in the evening. Sporadic hatches of Blue Wing Olive caddis and some midges are the main items. Indicator nymphing with a two fly rig has been producing some a few nice fish. We’re still seeing quite a few smaller fish (6 to 10 inch range) being caught which is indicative of recent spawn success. Blue Wing olives have been hatching in the afternoon so fish BWO nymphs under a caddis or other attractor. Remember to go small and light with point fly with a Blue Wing Olive or midge down to 6x tippet. Fishing should only improve as water levels drop and fish begin staging for the spawn.

Guide Tip : Try using a San Juan Worm with a small Baetis dropper in deeper slots. Some nice fish landed last week on SJW’s. Also hesitate to throw on an egg pattern soon as fish will begin keying on them.

Steelhead Season is on!

Steelhead have finally found their way into California's coastal rivers with the recent torrential rains. The rivers blew out of course but are finally dropping into shape. There is a heart pounding wild California Steelhead out there with your name on it.

Lower Sac wine maker's weekend trip report

Recently we fished a great group of guys from VIP Wealth Management of Southern California. They enjoyed two days of fly fishing on Lower Sacramento up in Redding. Two day drifts were the bookends on a great wine maker’s dinner on Saturday night. Fun fishing was had along with Lots of good laughs and stories told over great food and superb wines. This was definitely a trip to remember.

Most of the guys had never fly fished before, although as life-long conventional anglers they would pick fly fishing up very quickly.

Casters, I have one space left for this weekends Spey Casting Camp. Its a 2-Day, spey filled school taught on the American River that will allow you to immerse yourself in "everything spey", both double handed and single handed rods. We'll even cover fishing and maybe even catch a shad or two. Cost is only $350 for both days including lunch and gear if needed. Check the following link for more info (or call me at 916-366-7554 for the last reservation):

With June 3 weeks away summer is nearly officially and un-officially here. Many rivers are coming into shape as run off subsides but with reservoirs feet from being filled I imagine there maybe a second wave of run off when we get some consistent HOT weather and the night time temps stay hot as well. Here is what is happening and what is coming up.

Lower Yuba has dropped into shape and is stable at 2337 cfs with good clarity. Fishing has been good. Hatches should pick up over the next few weeks as the river settles into the new flow. We are entering prime time on the Lower Yuba for spring/early summer hatches. The weeks following run off see PMD, caddis, stoneflies, and all sorts of mixed hatches kicking into gear. Fish will be on the grab coming off high and off color flows and fishing will only get better as we move through June and July.

Lower Sacramento River is still fishing consistent for trout up through redding but I have began to turn my attention to the lower river looking for shad, stripers, bass, and carp. Shad fishing is picking up as people are starting to catch a few here and a few there down around Princeton up through chico. Flows have been hovering around 10,000cfs coming out of Keswick but drop down to around 7000cfs around Ord Bend as we are in the middle of Rice Irrigation season. Once that is over here shortly the river down by Chico/Ord Bend should jump up moving fish up the river. This will also help move the migratory stripers up river and give the resident fish a bit more water making them a bit more comfortable. Smallies and Big mouth bass are waking up in the sloughs and I have seen a few fish up on beds and cruising the shallows. It is going to be getting really good really soon out there.

Excellent fly fishing for Steelhead continues on California's North Coast

The past week on California's north coast was another good one for Steelhead. The water was lower and clearer than I would have liked it. Just like any steelhead river.. The lower it gets the more difficult the fishing tends to be. Word must have been out because there were lots of boats as well. Despite the traffic we were averaging 8 hook-ups a day.

There was an even mix of fresh fish and kelts. The fish were a little smaller than last week .. Good thing is that meant more in the net :) Rain showed up on Tuesday and continued through Thursday afternoon. Most rivers blew out and are already dropping back in.

Wild Steel!!!Wild Steel!!!

This could be the last hurrah ....!!!!!

Let's fish,

Joshua

Fly fishing the Yuba River December 10, 2011

Last weekend I had the pleasure of guiding Rusty and his girlfriend Deserae on the Yuba River. We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day. You have to love California weather. To be fly fishing with dries in December is a pretty great thing!
