Northern California Fly Fishing Report – April 22, 2017

Best Bets... Delta, Truckee or Pyramid

American – Poor Flows 14,200 cfs Water Temp high 50’s degrees. Water Clarity – Off color

Striper should be showing up in the American soon. We're not exactly sure how all this rain will affect the timing of their migration this season. However judging by how things are really picking up on the Delta, it shouldn't be too long. When they do arrive stripping flies on sinking lines is the name of the game. Traditionally good flies for this time of year will be Byng’s Bait fish in white/chartreuse, Toby’s American River Rainbow Clouser and the Stay Hungry Streamer in gray/white.

We are looking forward to shad fishing this season as well. Stay tuned in late May for things to get going. Shad will take flies that are swung or nymphed.

If you are looking forward to striper or shad fishing on the American and would like some professional help give us a call at (707)287-2939 916)722-8594 at the shop. We have some of the very best most patient and competent guides around. Let us assist you in getting the most out of your time on the water.

Delta Stiper – Good to great! Water Temp high 60-62’s degrees. Water Clarity – Clear in some areas, murky in others.

Northern California Fly Fishing Report – December 2016

American River – Fair Flows –1,250 cfs out of Natomas. Water temps – Low to Mid 50’s to Water clarity – clear

The American is closed from Ancil Hoffman power line to Hazel Avenue bridge. Fish are moving in with each storm and swinging traditional flies below Hoffman for winter steelhead has produced some fish. Things will really kick in to gear in late December and fish well throught January and February.

Swung flies as well as nymphing are both producing. Perhaps it may be good to give the Trinity or Klamath a try or perhaps head over the hill to Pyramid or wait until the fish get in a little thicker.

Remember the middle/upper section open up Jan 1st and things will be a go! Call us at (707)287-2939 or the shop at (916)722-8594 to book a trip on the American or one of the other great options this time of year.

Delta Stiper- Good to Fair. Water Temp mid 50’s and dropping. Water Clarity – Clear to stained depending on location.

Northern California Fly Fishing Report – October 2016

Northern California Fly Fishing Report – October, 2016

American River – Fair Flows – 1,500 CFS. Temp. – Mid to low 50’s. Water clarity – Perfect

Northern California Fly Fishing Report – October 2016

American River – Good Flows – 1,800 CFS. Temp. – High 50’s to low 60’s. Water clarity – Very clear

We are still seeing good numbers of shaker stripers, but also some bigger ones too on the American. The striper fishing will start to slow down in the next few weeks as the water temps drop, so get out now while the fishing is good. The salmon are slowly coming in, not in great numbers yet, but they are making their way in. The good news is there are a good amount of half pounders in the system, which makes for a fun day on the water. Between the stripers and steelhead, you couldn't ask for a better time. If the flows stay higher than it did last year, the American should be a good place to get away for a few hours, especially below the power lines after the upper closes. Mid river has been holding a few more fish over the past few years, shhhhhhh! This is nice to see, so come mid October to mid December give this section a try. Also, don't forget, the upper section closes November 1st, and reopens up January 1st, we already have a few dates booked around the opener, so don't miss out.

Best flies for striper have been Byng’s Bait fish in white/chartreuse, Toby’s American River Rainbow Clouser and the Stay Hungry Streamer in gray/white. For steelhead/half pounders try caddis pupae or small clinger type mayfly nymphs or eggs.

Delta Stiper - Good Water Temp 68-70 degrees. Water Clarity – Good. Delta smallmouth – Good to Fair Water Clarity – Good to great depending on how many boaters are on the water.
