Northern California Fly Fishing Report, Dec 3, 2018

Winter arrived this last week and with it some much needed rain fall and snow in the high country. This new moisture is sure to get our anadromous friends moving in our Northern California rivers. After reading the report if anything hits your hot button, give us a call at (530)242-4122 or (707)287-2939. We will be happy to help set up some productive winter fishing.

Our gift certificates for guided trips make great Christmas presents. Perhaps a not so subtle hint is in order? For more info on giving and receiving the gift of fly fishing click here...

We want to say thank you to those of you who fished with us this year. We are already looking forward to 2019. There is still some good fishing to be had between now and then. Wishing you all the best.

Striper fishing in the Delta has been pretty good. Some rain & wind can create challenges but for the most part the weather has been manageable. The season will likely wind down over the next month or so but for the time being it’s holding strong. Most fish we have been finding are smaller “schoolies” but 3-5lb fish are mixed in & the occasional larger fish can be found as well! Water temperatures are 50-55 degrees in different spots within the Delta depending on where you fish. For Stripers sub surface I continue to use 1/0-3/0 Clouser style flies in various color combinations.

Northern California Fly Fishing Report - May 13, 2018

Things are really jumping off right now throughout the Golden State for those of us who love to pursue fish with a fly. A myriad of exciting species are coming into range. Options include shad and striper which are entering the rivers to spawn, trout fishing opening up at the higher elevations and continued success on many central valley rivers. Largemouth and smallmouth fishing is taking off in our beloved Delta and Sierra Foothill Lakes and there are a few more days of swinging for Spring run steelhead to be had. There is something out there for everyone right now. From dries, nymphs and streamers to poppers and swung flies what ever your pleasure it's go time! Don't forget to like and share and email us with your fishing reports and photos for inclusion in the next report.

Bets: Lower Sacramento, Upper Sacramento, McCloud River, Putah Creek - Trout, Yuba River -Shad and Striper, American River - Striper, Sierra foothill Lakes - Bass, Lake Almanor - Trout and Bass.

A few straggler Spring run steelhead and half pounders are around and are being taken on the swing as well as nymphing however our attention is now shifted to two perennial returnees to the American...Striper and Shad.

Striper are already staging on the Sacramento and a few are into the Lower American. Some shad have been caught by conventional anglers at the confluence. Maury Hatch has begun his annual shift up from the Delta to target the striper that come up out of the Sacramento to spawn. Fishing is still a little unpredictable. One day is decent the next is slow. You have to keep moving to find fish. Fish Best flies have been Byng’s Bait fish in white/chartreuse, Toby’s American River Rainbow Clouser and the Stay Hungry Streamer in gray/white. We are looking forward to some more hot weather which will usher in the 2016 shad run. Stay tuned!

Call the Shop at (916)722-1055 for updates on current conditions or to schedule spring striper or shad fishing. We have a few weekend dates open but things are filling up fast.

American River- Fair Flows are low and temps - high 50’s but fishable. (575CFS)

USGS reports flows are at 575 CFS and climbing. The recent rain should help continue this trend and bring fresh fish into the system.
