Northern California Fly Fishing Report – November 1, 2016

American River – Fair Flows 1,200 cfs. Water Temp - Mid 60's. Clarity - Clear

The upper American from Hazel to Power Line is closed as of November 1st. Some fishing going on below for steelhead but reports have been hit or miss. Some half pounders caught this week on the swing with soft hackles. Nymphing also producing. Please wade carefully this time of year and watch for redds. May be time to give the Trinity, Feather and Klamath a go! Call (707)287-2939 or or the shop at (916)722-8594 for info on the other great options.

Delta Striper- Good Water Temp mid 60’s degrees. Water Clarity – Clear.

Striper fishing continues to be good on the Delta. We are catching amazing numbers of fish in the 12 to 18” range. The challenge has been to find fish 20” or bigger but there are a few big ones mixed in & more fish showing daily!

Key patterns include chartreuse/white clousers in various sizes. Gurglers & Pole Dancers also work if you wish to try your hand at topwater which can be really fun!” Bryce Tedford says "Although we have not been catching larger fish consistently it has been a blast to catch 20-30 schoolies per Rod & always have the chance at hooking a toad!" Maury guests have been experiencing an excellent Fall LMB bite in some locations with Bass from 2#-5# common on most outings.
Guide Tip: ”Try throwing a larger fly if you are only into chasing the larger fish. This will help target the bigger ones.”

Call now to reserve great Fall fishing before it is gone. We can be reached at the shop at (916)722-1055 or (707)287-2939 to get out with Maury, Bryce and Toby for some memorable Fall action.

American River – Good Flows – 1,800 CFS. Temp. – High 50’s to low 60’s. Water clarity – Very clear

We are still seeing good numbers of shaker stripers, but also some bigger ones too on the American. The striper fishing will start to slow down in the next few weeks as the water temps drop, so get out now while the fishing is good. The salmon are slowly coming in, not in great numbers yet, but they are making their way in. The good news is there are a good amount of half pounders in the system, which makes for a fun day on the water. Between the stripers and steelhead, you couldn't ask for a better time. If the flows stay higher than it did last year, the American should be a good place to get away for a few hours, especially below the power lines after the upper closes. Mid river has been holding a few more fish over the past few years, shhhhhhh! This is nice to see, so come mid October to mid December give this section a try. Also, don't forget, the upper section closes November 1st, and reopens up January 1st, we already have a few dates booked around the opener, so don't miss out.

Best flies for striper have been Byng’s Bait fish in white/chartreuse, Toby’s American River Rainbow Clouser and the Stay Hungry Streamer in gray/white. For steelhead/half pounders try caddis pupae or small clinger type mayfly nymphs or eggs.

Delta Stiper - Good Water Temp 68-70 degrees. Water Clarity – Good. Delta smallmouth – Good to Fair Water Clarity – Good to great depending on how many boaters are on the water.
